The character and the different sizes of a dachshund (as described in the breeding standard of the Dutch Dachshund Club)
It is said that Dachshunds are very bright and have a mind of their own. Well.....that's true!
They are smart en resourceful and very affectionate towards their own people. They are extremely watchful and are curious and brave by nature.
In contrast to most other breeds, Dachshunds are searching for eye contact. They read the minds of their people which creates a very special bond.
Dachshunds are great comedians. They have a great sense of humor and realy appreciate it when they can make you laugh.
By nature a Dachshund wants to be heard and you have to be careful that he knows who is boss. Give a Dachshund a finger and he will take your whole hand.
You cannot expect strict obedience of this breed because a Dachshund will try to have the last word till his very last breath. You can, however, get your Dachshund to obey you, it will only take a little more patience and effort from your side than with other breeds.
Dachshunds are hunting dogs with an often passionate hunting drive which is the reason that every Dachshund realy has a mind of it's own.
Dachshunds are bred in three hair variaties (smooth, long and wire) and three different sizes, which makes a total of 9 different variaties.
The largest is the Normal size Dachshund*, his chest size measures 35 cm and up. The average weight can vary from 6 to 10 kg.
The middle type is de Miniature size Dachshund*, who has a chest size of 30 tot 35 cm and its weight lies between 4 and 6 kg.
Last but not lease we have the smallest Dachshunds, the Toy size or Kaninchen (rabbit) Dachshund*, whose chest size is max. 30 cm and has a weight of approximately 3 to 4 kg.
